First Mid Bank & Trust Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1865, First Mid is the parent company of First Mid Bank & Trust, N.A., First Mid Insurance Group, and First Mid Wealth Management Company.2 Accordingly, First Mid provides a wide variety of financial services, including personal and commercial banking, mortgage lending, insurance, wealth management, and farmland services. Headquartered in Mattoon, Illinois, First Mid has additional locations throughout Illinois, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin, and employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On October 17, 2023, First Mid learned that one of its service providers, Fiserv, had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, First Mid determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in MOVEit Transfer, a file transfer software used by Fiserv, between May 27 and May 31, 2023. On January 16, 2024, First Mid began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Financial account number
