Unum Group Insurance Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

On June 1, 2023, Unum and its subsidiary, Starmount Life Insurance Company, discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Unum determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in the MOVEit file sharing platform between May 31 and June 1, 2023. On August 3, 2023, Unum began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information
  • Financial information
  • Tax identification number
