Headquartered in Whittier, California, Credit Union of Southern California operates multiple locations in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties, as well as dozens of ATMS throughout the greater California area.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On or about January 31, 2023, Credit Union of Southern California discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Credit Union of Southern California determined an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information between January 11 and January 31, 2023 through a CalBear employee’s email account. On May 18, 2023, Credit Union of Southern California began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The exact type of personal information has not been made publicly available by Credit Union of Southern California. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number or other government issued identification number
- Financial information
- Account passwords or other access codes for financial accounts
- Biometric data
- Genetic information
- Health records, including medical diagnosis, treatment or health insurance policy number
