NorthStar Emergency Medical Services Data Breach Investigation

NorthStar EMS is an emergency medical services and medical transportation company. Founded in 1992, NorthStar EMS began with only two ambulances providing service to Northport, Alabama. Since then, NorthStar EMS has rapidly grown to maintain over 80 ambulances and employ more than 350 individuals. In addition to providing emergency response hospital transportation, NorthStar EMS also offers prehospital care, non-emergency medical transportation, and EMS training services. Headquartered in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, NorthStar EMS conducts operations in eight Alabama counties.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 16, 2022, NorthStar EMS discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, NorthStar EMS determined that an unauthorized actor accessed this sensitive information. On March 14, 2023, NorthStar EMS began contacting individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information and/or Medicare or Medicaid number
  • Medical information (e.g., patient identification number, treatment information)
