Independent Living Systems Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 2001, Independent Living Systems provides a variety of solutions, including managed long-term care services and support, comprehensive care management, meals and nutritional support services, third-party administration, and more. Today,  Independent Living Systems serves over 4 million individuals, including 250,000 Medicaid and dual eligible members. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, Independent Living Systems employs more than 800 individuals in 10 offices throughout the United States. In 2022, it was reported that Independent Living Systems expected to reach $1 billion in annual revenue.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On May 31, 2023, Independent Living Systems discovered it had experienced a potential data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Independent Living Systems determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a vulnerability in MOVEit Transfer, a third-party file transfer tool it utilizes. In December 2023, Independent Living Systems began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Health insurance information (e.g., policy number/subscriber number, patient name)
