Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Data Breach Investigation

PVHMC is a fully accredited, acute care hospital serving eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino counties in California.3 Founded in 1903, PVHMC is home to four Centers of Excellence: The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center, Stead Heart and Vascular Center, Women’s & Children’s Center, and Trauma Center, and offers a full-service Emergency Department, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Perinatal Center.3 Specialized services provided by PVHMC include sleep disorder diagnosis and treatment, robotic surgery, and the Family Medicine Residency Program, in affiliation with the University of California, Los Angeles.3 Headquartered in Pomona, California, PVHMC has five additional locations and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, PVHMC became aware of a data breach in which its patients’ protected health information may have been accessed and acquired. The incident involved unauthorized access to a system used by a PVHMC vendor to store patient information. Through its investigation, PVHMC determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information in late 2023. As a result, PVHMC began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Medical record number
  • Medical information (e.g., allergies, diagnoses, medications, doctors’ notes)
