Moses Lake Community Health Center Data Breach Investigation

MLCHC is a non-profit, community-driven healthcare organization based in Washington. Founded in 1978, MLCHC provides comprehensive primary health care services for families, with a special focus on the underserved and migrant farmworkers.2 Accordingly, MLCHC’s care services include dental and endodontic, women’s health, medical imaging, behavioral health, laboratory, pharmacy, nutrition, and maternity support services. Headquartered in Moses Lake, Washington, MLCHC has three additional locations in Washington and employs over 300 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In September 2023, MLCHC discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, MLCHC determined that an unauthorized party may have accessed this sensitive information via two employee email accounts between July 26, 2023, and September 19, 2023. On January 8, 2024, MLCHC began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Employee health insurance information
  • Patient identification number
  • Medical information (e.g., dates of service, treatment/diagnosis information, lab results, provider name)
