Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating the Counseling Center of Wayne & Holmes Counties (“CCWHC”) regarding its recent data breach. The CCWHC data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 83,000 individuals.
ABOUT THE COUNSELING CENTER OF WAYNE & HOLMES COUNTIES:
CCWHC is a mental health treatment center based in Ohio. Founded in 1953, CCWHC provides a range of mental health treatment services for children and adults, including adult case management, counseling and therapy, crisis services, school-based programs, psychiatric services, residential services, and more.2,3 Headquartered in Wooster, Ohio, CCWHC provides services to over 5,000 individuals and families annually and operates three additional locations in Orrville, Millersburg, and Rittman, Ohio.2,3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, CCWHC announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, on March 3, 2025, CCWHC was alerted to suspicious activity by its third-party service provider after experiencing a disruption in CCWHC’s systems.1 As a result, CCWHC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, CCWHC confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, CCWHC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license or state identification number
- Health insurance information
- Medical condition information
- Treatment provider name
- Medical record number
- Treatment cost information
- Diagnosis and/or treatment information
As a result of the breach, CCWHC posted notice of the breach on its website. Additionally, on February 9, 2026, CCWHC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
