Cottage Hospital Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT COTTAGE HOSPITAL:

Cottage Hospital is a healthcare center based in New Hampshire. Operating for over 100 years, Cottage Hospital provides a range of healthcare services to patients, including emergency and trauma care, respiratory therapy, orthopedics, diagnostic imaging, surgical services, urology, rehabilitative services, cardiology, primary care, and more.2,3 Headquartered in Woodsville, New Hampshire, Cottage Hospital employs over 250 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cottage Hospital announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, on December 8, 2025, Cottage Hospital learned that an unauthorized party gained access to its computer network and took some of Cottage Hospital’s files.1 As a result, Cottage Hospital launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Cottage Hospital confirmed that sensitive personal information in its network related to patients and employees may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between October 14 and October 21, 2025. As a result, Cottage Hospital began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:1,4

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number
  • Bank account information
  • Contact information
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information (provider name, internal patient identification number, dates of services, medication information, treatment and/or diagnostic information)

 

As a result of the breach, Cottage Hospital posted notice of the breach on its website. Additionally, on February 6, 2026, Cottage Hospital began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Cottage Hospital is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
