DFA is a farmer-owned cooperative based in Kansas. Founded in 1998, DFA offers various services such as milk marketing, dairy foods processing, and dairy products & ingredients manufacturing.2 Headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas, DFA employs over 15,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, DFA reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, beginning on June 11, 2025, an unauthorized third-party gained access to DFA’s network.1 As a result, DFA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, DFA confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, DFA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 15, 2025, DFA completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- State issued ID number
- Date of birth
- Bank account number
- Medicare or Medicaid number
On October 14, 2025, DFA began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, DFA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
