Founded in 1933, Wilkes offers over 70 majors and minors for undergraduates and graduates, including accounting, art history, biology, civil engineering, computer science, education, and more.2,3,4 Headquartered in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Wilkes employs over 200 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Wilkes announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice shared on its website, Wilkes discovered that an unauthorized actor may have gained access to its network environment.1 As a result, Wilkes launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Wilkes confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between on or about January 25 and on or about January 26, 2025.1 As a result, Wilkes began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Student ID number
- Driver’s license number or state identification number
- Financial account number
- Financial aid information
- Health insurance policy number
- Medical alert information
On October 1, 2025, Wilkes posted notice of the data breach to its website. Additionally, on October 8, 2025, Wilkes began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Wilkes is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the website breach notice is below.
