Bastyr is a private university based in Washington. Founded in 1978, Bastyr specializes in education, research, and clinical service in the natural health arts and sciences.3 The graduate and undergraduate programs offered by Bastyr include naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, traditional medicine, exercise science, midwifery, nutrition, health psychology, and herbal sciences.3 Headquartered in Kenmore, Washington, Bastyr employs over 200 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Bastyr reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on April 30, 2025, Bastyr learned of suspicious activity on certain systems in its environment.1 As a result, Bastyr launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Bastyr confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party between April 23 and April 30, 2025.1 As a result, Bastyr began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 2, 2025, Bastyr completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Medical records
On September 17, 2025, Bastyr began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice being sent to Maine residents, Bastyr is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to the letters that Bastyr filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
