WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Check City reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or about April 3, 2025, Check City observed a network disruption event as a result of unauthorized access to its network.1 As a result, Check City launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Check City confirmed that the sensitive personal information in its system may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party on or about March 21, 2025.1 As a result, Check City began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes: 5

- Social Security number
- Driver’s license information
- Financial account information (account number, credit or debit card number
- Government-issued ID number (passport, state ID card)
- Address
- Date of birth
On September 10, 2025, Check City began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
