Wood River Health Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Wood River Health (WRH”), regarding its recent data breach. The WRH data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 54,900 individuals.

ABOUT WOOD RIVER HEALTH:

WRH is a healthcare 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Rhode Island. Founded in 1976, WRH is a full-service medical, dental, and behavioral health care facility offering patient-centered care.2 Headquartered in Hope Valley, Rhode Island, WRH also has additional locations in Westerly and Block Island, Rhode Island, and its service area includes Charlestown, Richmond, Hope Valley, Hopkinton, Westerly, Exeter, and West Greenwich, Rhode Island, as well as Pawcatuck and North Stonington, Connecticut.2,3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, WRH announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised.1 According to the breach notice posted on its website, on August 8, 2024, WRH experienced a data security incident that impacted an employee email account.1 As a result, WRH launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, WRH learned that an unauthorized actor accessed the email account and may have viewed or acquired certain information between August 8, 2024, and September 6, 2024.1 As a result, WRH began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On June 17, 2025, WRH concluded its investigation.  According to the breach notice, the sensitive personal information potentially affected includes the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Drivers’ license
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Employment records

On July 28, 2025, WRH began providing notice to impacted individuals. Based on the notice sent to Maine residents, WRH is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. A link to the breach report filed by the Attorney General of Maine is below.
