Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Western Montana Mental Health Center (“WMMHC”) regarding its recent data breach. The WMMHC data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 86,700 individuals.

WMMHC is a mental health facility for those who struggle with mental health and substance use disorders.2 Founded in 1971, WMMHC provides comprehensive services with 25 programs to meet the needs of people. Headquartered in Missoula, Montana, WMMHC has twelve locations across Western Montana.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 17, 2025, WMMHC posted a notice on its website that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on September 15, 2025, WMMHC discovered that an unauthorized actor gained access to its systems and may have viewed or accessed specific files.1 As a result, WMMHC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, WMMHC confirmed that its systems were accessed on or about May 27, 2025. As a result, WMMHC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license/ State Identification number
- Health Insurance
- Medical information
- Financial account information
As a result of the data breach, WMMHC posted a notice of the incident on its website and began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, WMMHC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
