Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Dordt University (“Dordt”) regarding its recent data breach. The Dordt data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 34,200 individuals.
ABOUT DORDT UNIVERSITY:
Dordt is an accredited Christian liberal arts university located in Sioux Center, Iowa. Founded in 1955, Dordt offers more than 40 majors and 12 pre-professional programs of study.2 With a 14:1 student/faculty ratio, Dordt has over 100 full time faculty members.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Dordt reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Dordt detected suspicious activity on its computer network.1 As a result, Dordt launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Dordt confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems, may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between April 21 and May 16, 2024.5 As a result, Dordt began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. This review concluded on June 19, 2025.5 While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Account information (account number, routing number, security code)
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
- Address
- Date of birth
On July 11, 2025, Dordt began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Dordt is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
