WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Nova Scotia Power announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on April 25, 2025, Nova Scotia Power discovered that an unauthorized third party had gained access to certain parts of its Canadian network and servers.1 As a result, Nova Scotia Power launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Nova Scotia Power confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to customers may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between March 19, 2025, and April 25, 2025.1 As a result, Nova Scotia Power began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Insurance number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Phone number and email address
- Mailing and service addresses
- Nova Scotia Power program participation information
- Customer account history (e.g., power consumption, service requests, customer payment, billing and credit history, customer correspondence)
- Bank account numbers
As a result of the data breach, Nova Scotia Power posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on June 6, 2025, Nova Scotia Power began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Nova Scotia Power is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
