Alpha Baking is a food production and distribution company based in Illinois. Established in 1979 with the acquisition of the Mary Ann Baking Company in Chicago, Alpha Baking provides a variety of baked goods to grocery chains and independent grocery stores, restaurant chains, quick service restaurants, schools, institutions, and more.2 Today, Alpha Baking ‘s brands S. Rosen’s, Mary Ann, Natural Ovens Bakery, Kreamo, Golden Hearth, and Castle.2 Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Alpha Baking has six production plants across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Alpha Baking reported to the Attorney General of Maine that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on January 23, 2025, Alpha Baking identified unusual activity on its computer network.1 As a result, Alpha Baking launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Alpha Baking confirmed that sensitive personal information in its human resources files may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party on January 22, 2025. As a result, Alpha Baking began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 2, 2025, Alpha Baking completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Alpha Baking. However, according to Maine state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or state identification card number
- Account number, credit card number or debit card number, if circumstances exist wherein such a number could be used without additional identifying information, access codes or passwords
- Account passwords or personal identification number or other access codes
On May 13, 2025, Alpha Baking began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Alpha Baking is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
