Rio Marine is a marine servicing facility for boats and vessels based in Texas. Founded in 1929 as Glynn Electric and sold in 2002, Rio Marine established and expanded until 2023 when Rio Marine created four new divisions; marine, controls and hydraulics, electronics, and power management.4 Today, Rio Marine services include basic repairs and upgrades, refits and installations, vessel maintenance, hydraulic systems and more.3 Headquartered in Channelview, Texas, Rio Marine employs over 150 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
On June 5, 2025, Rio Marine reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, in August 2024, Rio Marine identified suspicious activity within its network.1 As a result, Rio Marine launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on May 19, 2025, Rio Marine confirmed that sensitive information in its network may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party on or around July 30, 2024.1 As a result, Rio Marine began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Government issued ID number (e.g. passport, state ID card)
- Financial information (e.g. account number, credit or debit card number)
- Health insurance information
On June 5, 2025, Rio Marine began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Rio Marine is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
