WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, BBB discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or around May 31, 2024, BBB discovered unauthorized access to their network.1 As a result, BBB launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

On April 30, 2025, BBB concluded their investigation and confirmed that sensitive personal information and protected health information may have been compromised by an unauthorized party during the breach. As a result, BBB began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license numbers or state identification numbers
  • Government identification numbers
  • Financial account information
  • Credit or debit card information
  • Online credentials
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance policy information

On May 21, 2025, BBB began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Additionally, BBB posted a notice of the incident on its website. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, BBB is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. A link to the formal breach notification letters that BBBfiled with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
