Alera Group Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT ALERA GROUP, INC.:

Alera Group is an independent, national insurance and financial services firm.5 Founded in 2017, Alera Group began when 24 employee benefits firms partnered together to provide expert solutions in employee benefits, property and casualty services, retirement planning, and wealth management services.5 Additionally, Alera Group services businesses, individuals, families, and communities with specialists and customized solutions.4 Headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, Alera Group employs over 4,500 individuals with offices across 35 states.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Alera Group announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, in August 2024, Alera Group became aware of unauthorized access to their technology environment.1 As a result, Alera Group launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

On April 28, 2025, Alera Group confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to current and former employees, and dependents of employees, may have been removed from the network by an unauthorized third party.1 Through its investigation, Alera Group also confirmed that the breach occurred between July 19 and August 4, 2024.1 As a result, Alera Group began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Demographic information
  • Date of birth
  • Birth/marriage certificate
  • Driver’s license
  • Financial account or credit card information
  • Passport
  • Other government-issued identification (potentially including state ID, military ID, tribal ID or taxpayer identification number)
  • Medical information (potentially including medical history, condition, or diagnosis information, medications, and other treatment or testing information)
  • Medical Record Number
  • Insurance or claims data (potentially including health insurance information and Medicare/Medicaid ID)
  • Electronic/digital signatures
  • Biometric information
  • Username and password information

 

As a result of the breach, Alera Group posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on May 21, 2025, Alera Group began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Alera Group is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
