Balance Autism Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Balance Autism regarding its recent data breach. The Balance Autism data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT BALANCE AUTISM:

Balance Autism is a non-profit mental healthcare organization based in Iowa. Founded in 1994, Balance Autism offers an array of services to children and adults, including clinical and community services, parent training, 24/7 living services, community living, and vocational services. Today, Balance Autism offers services to more than 300 children and 150 adults annually; and has an operating budget of $21 million.2 Headquartered in Altoona, Iowa, Balance Autism has eight additional locations and campuses and employs over 400 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Balance Autism announced that the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around March 17, 2025, Balance Autism discovered suspicious activity on certain network systems.1 As a result, Balance Autism launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Balance Autism confirmed that sensitive personal information may have been accessed and copied by an unauthorized third party between March 11 and March 17, 2025. As a result, Balance Autism began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 5, 2025, Balance Autism completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Medicaid Number

 

As a result of the data breach, Balance Autism posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Balance Autism recently began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Balance Autism is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complementary credit monitoring services.
