Hunter Health Data Breach Investigation

ABOUT HUNTER HEALTH CLINIC:

Hunter Health is a full-service healthcare provider based in Kansas. Founded in 1976 by Dr. Vernon Dyer, a Choctaw and Prairie Band Potawatomi OB/GYN physician, Hunter Health was founded out of an need for culturally relevant healthcare services tailored to the Urban Native American community of Wichita.3 Today, Hunter Health offers an array of services to patients, including medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, behavioral health, and health education services.3,4 Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, Hunter Health has two additional location in Wichita and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Hunter Health announced that the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around September 30, 2024, Hunter Health detected that an unauthorized party obtained access to an employee email account.1 As a result, Hunter Health launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, on May 1, 2025, Hunter Health confirmed that sensitive personal information may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between September 27 and September 30, 2024. As a result, Hunter Health began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted, as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • State identification and other identification numbers
  • Financial account information
  • Medical and clinical information
  • Patient account numbers
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Hunter Health posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on May 15, 2025, Hunter Health began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Hunter Health is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complementary credit monitoring services.
