SBCU is a community-based credit union based in California. Founded in 1953 as Centinela-South Bay Credit Union, SBCU offers a variety of financial services and products to individuals and businesses, including checking and savings accounts, credit and debit cards, auto, personal, and home loans, financial education, insurance services, mobile banking services, and more. As of December 31, 2024, SBCU has over $158 million in total assets.3 Headquartered in Redondo Beach, California, SBCU has two additional locations in California.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, SBCU reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around November 18, 2024, SBCU discovered suspicious activity related to one employee’s email account.1 As a result, SBCU launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, SBCU confirmed that sensitive personal information in the email account may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, SBCU began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Financial account information
On May 13, 2025, SBCU began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, SBCU is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
