OCH is a hospital and healthcare system based in Mississippi. Founded in 1973, OCH provides medical care in over 20 specialty areas, including orthopedics, maternity care and breast health, cardiology, plastic surgery, pediatrics, and urology.3 Headquartered in Starkville, Mississippi, OCH has 13 clinics across the surrounding seven counties and employs over 500 individuals, including more than 300 doctors and nurses.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, OCH announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on September 14, 2023, OCH discovered that it had experienced a network security incident.1 As a result, OCH launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, OCH confirmed that on September 6, 2023, an unauthorized third party gained access to 67,000 files containing sensitive patient records in OCH’s possession.1 As a result, OCH began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Phone number
- Adress
- Date of birth
- Diagnosis
- Disability code
- Account number
- Insurance and payer information
As a result of the data breach, OCH posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, OCH plans to send breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
