WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Urban One reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, beginning on February 13, 2025, an unauthorized third party gained access to Urban One’s network through a sophisticated social engineering campaign.1 On March 15, 2025, Urban One became aware of the incident and launched an investigation to determine its nature.
Through its investigation, on March 30, 2025, Urban One confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to its employees may have been viewed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Urban One began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Direct deposit information
- W-2 information
On April 18, 2025, Urban One began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Urban One is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
