Fitzgerald Auto Malls Data Breach Investigation

Fitzgerald Auto Malls is an automotive retailer and car dealership company based in Maryland. Founded in 1966, Fitzgerald Auto Malls offers new and used cars from over 30 automotive brands such as Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, and Volkswagen.4 Additionally, Fitzgerald Auto Malls offers auto parts, service, and collision repair through its 45 collision locations.5 Headquartered in Rockville, Maryland, Fitzgerald Auto Malls has over 12 dealership locations across Maryland, Florida, and Pennsylvania, and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Fitzgerald Auto Malls announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, Fitzgerald Auto Malls recently detected unauthorized access to its network as a result of a cybersecurity incident.2 As a result, Fitzgerald Auto Malls launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Fitzgerald Auto Malls confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party on or around February 4, 2024. As a result, Fitzgerald Auto Malls began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On March 28, 2025, Fitzgerald Auto Malls completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • State issued and/or military identification number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information

 

As a result of the breach, Fitzgerald Auto Malls posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on April 25, 2025, Fitzgerald Auto Malls began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Fitzgerald Auto Malls is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
