Founded in 2018, Highland Rivers provides treatment, support, and recovery services for individuals affected by mental health disorders, intellectual developmental disabilities, and addictive diseases. 3 Today, Highland Rivers serves the communities of Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, and Whitfield counties.2 Headquartered in Dalton, Georgia, Highland Rivers has two locations and employs over 350 individuals.2
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Highland Rivers discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On April 15, 2025, Highland Rivers filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.1 Though much information is still not known about the Highland Rivers breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Highland Rivers breach included the protected health information belonging to over 2,200 individuals. As a result of the data breach, Highland Rivers may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
