Empire Group Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Empire Group of Reading PA, Inc. (“Empire Group”) regarding its recent data breach. The Empire Group data breach involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Empire Group is a construction company based in Pennsylvania. Founded in 1955, Empire Group is a business conglomerate composed of Empire Services, Elk Environmental Services, Berks Transfer, Delaware Valley Utility Contractors, and Delaware Valley Contractors.2 Today, the services offered across these companies includes demolition and excavation services, waste containment, hauling and waste disposal, full-service trucking and transportation, directional drilling, utility installation and repairs, and emergency response, environmental remediation, lab packing, and compliance training.2 Headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, Empire Group employs over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Empire Group reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised.  According to the breach notice, on January 23, 2025, Empire Group learned of unauthorized access to its systems.1 As a result, Empire Group launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Empire Group confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between January 16 and January 24, 2025.  As a result, Empire Group began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number

 

On April 17, 2025, Empire Group began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Empire Group is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted complimentary credit monitoring services.
