WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Local 1184 reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 17, 2024, Local 1184 an unauthorized third party appears to have used information obtained from sources other than the Local Union to gain access to Local 1184’s secure computer system and subsequently infect the system with ransomware.1 As a result, Local 1184 launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Local 1184 confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to both former and current members, others represented by the Local 1184, and employees may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Local 1184 began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Membership numbers
- Telephone numbers
- Home address
- Email address
- Work dispatch records
As a result of the data breach, Local 1184 began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, Local 1184 is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
