Medical Billing Specialists Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Medical Billing Specialists, Inc. (“MBS”) regarding its recent data breach. The MBS data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT MEDICAL BILLING SPECIALISTS, INC.:

MBS is a health care consulting and billing service company based in Massachusetts. Founded in 1993, MBS offers a variety of medical billing solutions to small- to mid-sized health care provider organizations, including  medical billing, in-house revenue cycle monitoring, practice management consulting, operational and financial performance audits, provider credentialing, new practice set-up, PM software vendor analysis & selection, system migration and data conversion, project management, business process optimization, MIPS and APM compliance, security risk analysis, and more.3,4 Additionally, MBS provides solutions in the areas of healthcare consulting, practice management, and HL7 data interfaces.3 Headquartered in Norwood, Massachusetts, MBS has an additional location in San Jose, California, and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MBS announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on February 17, 2024, MBS experienced a network disruption.1 As a result, MBS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, MBS confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party during the breach to its network. As a result, MBS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Credit or debit card number
  • Medical information (e.g., medical treatment, medical treatment dates, medical treatment location)
  • Medical record number
  • Patient identification number
  • Health insurance information
  • Medicare/Medicaid number

 

On December 15, 2024, MBS posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on January 7, 2025, MBS began mailing breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, MBS is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
