Trident Maritime Systems Data Breach Investigation

Trident is a shipbuilding company based in Virginia. With a history dating back to 1858, Trident offers engineered maritime solutions, specializing in cryogenic insulation, marine outfitting, system integration, automation, hybrid propulsion, energy management, scrubber installation and environmental solutions.3,4 Today, Trident serves shipbuilders and owners in the cruise, military, offshore oil + gas, and commercial ship markets.3 Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, Trident has locations across North America, Europe, and Asia, and employs over 2,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Trident announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in February 2023, Trident became aware of suspicious activity on its computer network.1 As a result, Trident launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Trident confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between February 1 and February 10, 2023. As a result, Trident began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. In January 2025, Trident completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Trident posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on February 17, 2025, Trident began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Trident is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
