New Era Life Insurance Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating New Era Enterprises, Inc., which includes New Era Life Insurance Company, New Era Life Insurance Company of the Midwest, and Life of America Insurance Company, (collectively, “New Era”) regarding its recent data breach. The New Era data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT NEW ERA ENTERPRISES, INC.:

New Era is an insurance company based in Texas. First incorporated in 1924, New Era offers a variety of insurance products, including 24-hour accident, annuities, critical illness, dental insurance, final expense life insurance, GAP insurance, health indemnity plans, and Medicare supplement insurance.3 Today, New Era’s family of companies include New Era Life Insurance Company, New Era Life Insurance Company of the Midwest, and Philadelphia American Life Insurance Company.4 Headquartered in Houston, Texas, New Era employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, New Era reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on December 18, 2024, New Era became aware of suspicious activity in its IT network.1 As a result, New Era launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, New Era confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to policyholders or their beneficiaries, independent agents, and New Era employees may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized third party between December 9 and December 18, 2024. As a result, New Era began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 31, 2025, New Era completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Financial account number
  • Medical treatment or diagnosis information
  • Health insurance policy number
  • Medicare identification number

 

On February 11, 2025, New Era began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, New Era is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
