Copper Valley Telecom Data Breach Investigation

Today, Copper Valley Telecom provides communication services including landline telephone for residents and businesses, calling features, long-distance, high-speed internet connectivity, and wireless voice and data.3 Additionally, Copper Valley Telecom offers high capacity special access services for businesses and telecommunication carriers over its fiber and microwave network.3 Headquartered in Valdez, Alaska, Copper Valley Telecom has two additional locations in Alaska and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Copper Valley Telecom announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on November 21, 2024, Copper Valley Telecom was made aware that it had experienced a cyber security incident. As a result, Copper Valley Telecom launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Copper Valley Telecom discovered that a threat actor had obtained its digital equipment that was no longer in use and extracted outdated data files belonging to its members.1 As a result, Copper Valley Telecom began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Capital credit account

 

As a result of the data breach, Copper Valley Telecom posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on January 2, 2025, Copper Valley Telecom began mailing individual breach notification letters affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Copper Valley Telecom is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
