Continental Café Holdings Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating the Continental Café Holdings, LLC (“Continental”) regarding its recent data breach. The Continental data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 5,000 individuals.

ABOUT CONTINENTAL CAFÉ HOLDINGS, LLC:

Continental is a dining and refreshment provider based in Michigan. Founded in 1989, Continental partners with businesses and offers a variety of food and beverage services, including meal delivery, 24/7 micro-markets and vending, office coffee and water services, on-demand pantry and snacks, dining cafes, onsite catering, and elevated work events.3 Spanning across Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and into Pennsylvania and New York through the acquisition of Cuyahoga Franklin Group, Continental serves clients of all sizes, from international industry leaders to small businesses, including manufacturing, technology, healthcare, education, commerce and more.4 Headquartered in Troy, Michigan, Continental has 17 additional locations across the Midwest and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Continental reported to the Attorney General of Montana that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on October 18, 2024, Continental became aware of unusual activity affecting the functionality of some of its servers.1 As a result, Continental launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Continental confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the breach in October 2024. As a result, Continental began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Driver’s license and passport number
  • Financial information
  • Health information (e.g., conditions that impacted ability to work, doctor’s notes pertaining to medical conditions or work absences, information about administration of Family Medical Leave Act accommodations)
  • Health insurance and employee benefits information (e.g., participation in Continental’s health insurance plan and the name and assigned number for the health insurance provider)

As a result of the data breach, Continental began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Montana residents, Continental is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted complimentary credit monitoring services. A link to the form breach notification letters that Continental filed with the Attorney General of Montana is below.
