Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating American Engineers, Inc. (“AEI”) regarding its recent data breach. The AEI data breach may have involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

AEI is a full-service civil engineering firm based in Kentucky. Founded in 1983, AEI offers a variety of services, including civil site engineering, geospatial, geotechnical, geophysical, environmental, structural, transportation design, landscape architecture, land acquisition, and construction phase services.2 On June 1, 2023, the firm was acquired by STV, Inc. and now operates as AEI, an STV Company. Today, AEI serves clients from offices in Glasgow, Louisville, Lexington, and Owensboro, Kentucky; and Acworth, Georgia.2 Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, AEI employs over 100 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, AEI reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on October 22, 2023, AEI became aware of suspicious activity related to certain systems within its network.1 As a result, AEI launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, AEI discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party during the incident. As a result, AEI began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by AEI. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or other government identification number
- Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
On or about April 25, 2024, AEI began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, AEI is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
