Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Vann Virginia Center for Orthopaedics, PC, which does business as Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists (“AOS”), regarding its recent data breach. The AOS data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 15,000 individuals.

AOS is a healthcare practice based in Virginia. Founded in 1919, AOS has grown to become one of the largest orthopaedic practices in the region.3 Today, AOS’ surgeons are trained in six orthopaedic sub-specialty areas and together with 23 physical and occupational specialists AOS offers healthcare services for both acute orthopaedic injuries and chronic skeletal muscle and soft tissue conditions.3 Its sub-specialty areas include spine and scoliosis, sports medicine, hand, elbow and shoulder, joint replacement, foot and ankle, orthopaedic oncology and pain management.3 Headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, AOS has three additional locations in Virginia and employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, AOS announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on August 6, 2024, AOS was alerted to unauthorized access to one corporate email account.1 As a result, AOS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on October 28, 2024, AOS discovered that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between June 20, 2024, and August 6, 2024. As a result, AOS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license, state identification, or other government identification number
- Credit or debit card information
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, AOS posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on November 22, 2024, AOS began mailing notices to affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, AOS is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
