Founded in 2014, Aperion Care provides a variety of services to individuals, including skilled nursing care, short term rehabilitation, psychiatric rehabilitation, and memory care.2 Additionally, Aperion Care offers long term living options to individuals who need assisted living, as well residents with Alzheimer’s, Dementia, hospice, or palliative care requirements.2 After its own start in 2007, Berkshire Nursing & Rehab Center became affiliated with Aperion Care in June 2014 and assumed the name of Aperion Care Forest Park.3 This location offers various therapies, rehab services, long-term care, and disease management.4 Headquartered in Lincolnwood, Illinois, Aperion Care has more than 60 additional locations across Illinois and Indiana and employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Aperion Care discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On November 18, 2024, Aperion Care filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights. Though much information is still not known about the Aperion Care breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Aperion Care breach included the protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals. As a result of the data breach, Aperion Care may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
