Equinox Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Equinox, Inc. regarding its recent data breach. The Equinox data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 21,000 individuals.

ABOUT EQUINOX, INC.:

Equinox is a nonprofit human services organization based in New York. Founded in 1947, Equinox provides an array of services, including substance abuse counseling, domestic violence shelter and outreach services, mental health services, youth shelter and supportive services, and more. Today, Equinox works collaboratively with numerous community organizations and serves 3,500 people annually in 10 locations, including residential facilities.4 Headquartered in Albany, New York, Equinox employs over 130 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Equinox announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on April 29, 2024, Equinox experienced an incident that disrupted access to some of its network resources.1 As a result, Equinox launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Equinox confirmed that sensitive personal information in its system may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third-party during the incident on April 29, 2024. As a result, Equinox began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or government issued identification number
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information (e.g., medical treatment or diagnosis information, medication-related information)
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Equinox posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on November 15, 2024, Equinox mailed breach notification letters to affected individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Equinox is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
