Maxar Space Systems Data Breach Investigation

Today, Maxar addresses a broad spectrum of needs for its customers, including mission systems engineering, product design, spacecraft manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing.2 Maxar partners with commercial, civil, and national security customers across dozens of industries worldwide, from telecommunications to defense and intelligence.2 Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Maxar employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Maxar reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on October 11, 2024, Maxar discovered that it had experienced a data breach that impacted employee personal data. As a result, Maxar launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Maxar confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party, with access lasting approximately one week before it was discovered by Maxar. As a result, Maxar began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Home address
  • Business contact information (e.g., business phone, location, business email, etc.)
  • Gender
  • Employment status
  • Employee number
  • Role information, such as job title, supervisor, and department
  • Hire data, role start date, and, if applicable, termination data

 

On November 15, 2024, Maxar began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice mailed to California residents, Maxar is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and, for some individuals, complimentary credit monitoring.
