RBN Insurance Services Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating RBN and Associates, Inc., which does business as RBN Insurance Services (“RBN’), regarding its recent data breach. The RBN data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 10,000 individuals.

ABOUT RBN AND ASSOCIATES, INC. D/B/A RBN INSURANCE SERVICES:

RBN is an insurance brokerage firm based in Illinois. Founded in 1993, RBN’s professionals work with businesses to assess risk, identify cost-efficient approaches to insurance, and negotiate with carriers to deliver comprehensive options at a competitive price.2 Today, RBN’s insurance services cover property and casualty, private equity advisory, people and benefits, and private client insurance.3 Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, RBN employs over 10 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, RBN reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on May 15, 2024, RBN became aware of suspicious activity within an employee email account. As a result, RBN launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, on June 11, 2024, RBN confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between February 24, 2024, and May 15, 2024. As a result, RBN began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Bank account information
  • Payment card information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Life insurance information

 

On November 14, 2024, RBN began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, RBN is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
