The YMCA data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 11,900 individuals.

YMCA is a non-profit organization based in Florida. Founded in 1885, YMCA offers a variety of programs and classes to its members and local community, including swimming lessons, youth sports, group exercise, camps, school programs, personal training, and child development.2 Headquartered in Orlando, Florida, YMCA has 17 additional locations in and around Orlando and employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, YMCA reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on May 20, 2024, YMCA discovered that it had experienced a cybersecurity incident. As a result, YMCA launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, YMCA confirmed that it was the subject of the ransomware attack and sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party. As a result, YMCA began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Passport number
- Financial account number
- Personal health information
On November 8, 2024, YMCA began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, YMCA is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
