WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Kaiser Permanente reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on September 3, 2024, Kaiser Permanente discovered that an unauthorized party gained access to the email accounts of two members of its workforce.1 As a result, Kaiser Permanente launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Kaiser Permanente confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party using the employee email accounts around August and September 2024. As a result, Kaiser Permanente began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Medical record number
  • Medical information

As a result of the data breach, Kaiser Permanente began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice mailed to California residents, Kaiser Permanente is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
