MWI Animal Health Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating MWI Veterinary Supply, Inc., which does business as MWI Animal Health (“MWI”), regarding its recent data breach. The MWI data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 19,000 individuals.

ABOUT MWI VETERINARY SUPPLY, INC. D/B/A MWI ANIMAL HEALTH:

MWI is part of the AmerisourceBergen Animal Health collection of companies based in Idaho.3 As the U.S. distribution business for the Animal Health division, MWI sources and distributes pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, and supplies for both the companion animal and livestock markets.3 Additionally, MWI provides a variety of solutions and services to animal related businesses, from providing animal care and customer service to managing day-to-day operations.4 Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, MWI employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, MWI reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, MWI recently discovered that it had experienced a data security incident. As a result, MWI launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, on September 30, 2024, MWI confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party on or around February 21, 2024. As a result, MWI began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license information
  • Government issued identification number
  • Financial information
  • Medical history and treatment information
  • Health insurance information

 

On November 4, 2024, MWI began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, MWI is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
