Saint Xavier University Data Breach Investigation

Saint Xavier is a coeducational, Catholic university located in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1846, Saint Xavier offers more than 40 undergraduate degree programs and nearly 30 graduate degree options in a variety of academic fields.2 Competing in the NAIA as the Cougars, Saint Xavier has 20 intercollegiate varsity teams and a total enrollment of over 3,500 students.4

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Saint Xavier announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in July 2023, Saint Xavier became aware of suspicious activity within its computer systems. As a result, Saint Xavier launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Saint Xavier confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and downloaded by an unauthorized third-party between June 29, 2023, and July 18, 2023. As a result, Saint Xavier began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state identification card numbers
  • Passport information
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Biometric information
  • Student identification numbers
  • Account access information

 

As a result of the data breach, Saint Xavier posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Saint Xavier is mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Saint Xavier is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
