MembersOwn is a locally owned credit union based in Nebraska. Founded in 1936, MembersOwn offers a variety of financial products and services to individuals, including checking and savings accounts, debit and credit cards, money market accounts, IRAs, home, home equity, auto, and personal loans, and online banking services. Headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, MembersOwn has an additional location in Beatrice, Nebraska, and employs over 10 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, MembersOwn announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on June 13, 2024, MembersOwn identified suspicious activity associated with its email environment.1 As a result, MembersOwn launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, MembersOwn confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party using an employee’s email account between June 12 and June 13, 2024. As a result, MembersOwn began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Addresses
- Driver’s license or other state identification number
- Financial account information
- Payment card information
- Individual health insurance policy number
On October 15, 2024, MembersOwn posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on October 14, 2024, MemberOwn began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, MembersOwn is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary identity theft protection services.
