Loring, Wolcott & Coolidge Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Loring, Wolcott & Coolidge (“LWC”) regarding its recent data breach. The LWC data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 8,000 individuals.

ABOUT LORING, WOLCOTT & COOLIDGE:

LWC is a financial service provider based in Massachusetts. Today, LWC offers a variety of integrated wealth management solutions to families and individuals. The products and services provided by LWC include estate planning and settlement, financial advice and planning, tax planning and preparation, and asset management.4 Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, LWC has one location and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, LWC reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on May 12, 2024, LWC became aware of suspicious activity within its computer environment. As a result, LWC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, LWC discovered that its systems were impacted by malware and sensitive personal information was viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party between April 26, 2024, and May 12, 2024. As a result, LWC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Adress
  • Driver’s license or state ID number
  • Bank account number
  • Username and password or email address and password
  • Tax identification number
  • IRS pin number
  • Health/Medical insurance policy number

 

On October 17, 2024, LWC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, LWC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
