Varsity Brands Data Breach Investigation

In 2013, BSN SPORTS and Varsity Spirit combined to become Varsity Brands.2 Today, Varsity Brands’ mission is to promote personal, school and community pride through its customizable products and programs to elementary and middle schools, high schools, and colleges and universities, as well as church organizations, professional and collegiate sports teams and corporations.3 To achieve this, Varsity Brands offers a variety of products and services, including team athletic gear, sports equipment, and custom uniforms for sports teams, cheerleaders, dancers, and bands, as well as camps, clinics, competitions, and comprehensive campus branding solutions.4 Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Varsity Brands employs over 5,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Varsity Brands reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on May 24, 2024, Varsity Brands became aware of suspicious activity on its computer systems. As a result, Varsity Brands launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Varsity Brands later determined that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized actor. As a result, Varsity Brands began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Varsity Brands. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license number, California ID card number, tax identification number, passport number, military ID number, or other unique ID number issued on a government document
  • Account number or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information
  • Unique biometric data generated from measurements or technical analysis of human body characteristics, such as a fingerprint, retina, or iris image, used to authenticate a specific individual
  • Genetic data

 

On October 14, 2024, Varsity Brands began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, Varsity Brands is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
