WHAT HAPPENED?
On October 7, 2024, American Water reported to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on October 3, 2024, American Water learned of unauthorized activity within its computer networks and systems, which it determined to be the result of a cybersecurity incident.1 Upon becoming aware of the issue, American Water launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
