Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (“JRC”), regarding its recent data breach. The JRC data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to over 3,500 individuals.

JRC is a day and residential school based in Massachusetts. Founded in 1971, JRC provides education and treatment to both emotionally disturbed students with conduct, behavior, emotional, and/or psychiatric problems, as well as those with intellectual disabilities or on the autism spectrum.3 Today, JRC operates approximately 50 residences in Massachusetts, located in the towns of Canton, Stoughton, Randolph, Easton, Attleboro, Rehoboth, Norton, Taunton, Dedham, Mansfield, Holbrook, South Easton, Raynham, Bridgewater.3 Headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, JRC employs approximately 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, JRC announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on February 13, 2024, JRC experienced a ransomware attack. As a result, JRC launched an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident.
Through its investigation, JRC learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third-party. As a result, JRC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On September 25, 2024, JRC completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or state identification card number
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, JRC posted notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on October 3, 2024, JRC began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, JRC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary identity monitoring services.
